Program Overview
Our program connects teens and young adults with caring mentors who provide guidance, encouragement, and support as they prepare for their future.
Over the course of each three-month session, participants will explore at least 10 different career paths through interactive, hands-on experiences and business-focused workshops led by professionals from a variety of industries. These sessions are designed to expose youth to new opportunities, build practical life and career skills, and help them discover their passions.
Our signature programs, Let's Get Cooking and Let's Keep It Real, run concurrently to provide a well-rounded learning experience that combines hands-on skill development with real-world business education, financial literacy, personal growth, and career readiness. Upon successful completion of both programs, participants will attend a special one-day Mentor Match Making Experience, where they will be paired with a mentor based on their interests, goals, and personality. Participation in both Let's Get Cooking and Let's Keep It Real is required to be eligible for mentor matching.
Let’s get Cooking
Hands-on skill exposure with Business Owners, Trade Professionals, and Creatives.
Let's Get Cooking is a fun, hands-on career exploration program designed to inspire youth through real-world experiences. During each interactive session, participants step into the shoes of professionals from a variety of careers, learning directly from experts who share their knowledge, skills, and passion.
Whether they're preparing food alongside a food truck owner, learning emergency response from a firefighter, exploring entrepreneurship with a daycare owner, capturing moments with a photographer, or creating styles with a hairstylist, youth don't just watch—they participate. Each session gives them the opportunity to ask questions, use real tools and equipment, and experience what it's like to work in different professions.
Our goal is to expose youth to careers they may have never considered, build confidence, spark curiosity, and help them discover their own interests and talents. Every experience encourages teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and valuable life skills while showing youth that their future possibilities are limitless.
Let’s Keep it Real
Reality Check Q&A Sessions With Business Owners, Trade Professionals, and Creatives
Let's Keep It Real is the educational component of our career exploration program, where youth gain the knowledge behind the profession. Led by experienced mentors and business professionals, each session provides honest conversations about what it really takes to succeed in a career or own a business.
Participants learn about the education, certifications, licenses, and training required for different professions, while also exploring the business side of entrepreneurship. Topics include business planning, startup costs, budgeting, taxes, insurance, marketing and advertising, customer service, hiring employees, financial responsibility, and the daily realities of running a successful business.
Mentors share their personal journeys—the challenges they faced, lessons they learned, and the strategies that helped them succeed. Youth are encouraged to ask questions, engage in meaningful discussions, and gain practical knowledge that prepares them to make informed decisions about their future.
By combining real-life experiences with honest mentorship and career education, Let's Keep It Real equips young people with the confidence, knowledge, and life skills they need to pursue their goals, build successful careers, and become future leaders and entrepreneurs.

Mentor Match Making Event
Mentor Matching Day is one of the most exciting milestones of the Something Sweet for the SouthSide experience. Before mentors and youth are officially paired, they will participate in fun, structured mentor-match conversations, designed to help everyone get to know one another.
During a series of one-on-one conversations, youth and mentors will have the opportunity to ask questions, share their interests, discuss career goals, and build genuine connections. This relaxed environment allows both mentors and mentees to discover shared personalities, passions, and values before the matching process begins.
At the conclusion of the event, mentors and youth will gather for a special Mentor Matching Ceremony, where the official mentor-mentee partnerships will be announced and celebrated. This memorable experience marks the beginning of meaningful relationships built on trust, encouragement, and a shared commitment to growth.
Our goal is to create thoughtful, lasting matches that inspire confidence, foster personal and professional development, and empower every young person to reach their full potential.
